A timeline through history with a structural lens highlights the types of building typologies that made the community of Hogan’s Alley comfortable and the types of structural decision-making that negatively impacted the community to this day. The axonometric view emphasizes experiential qualities while also comparing scale and relationships. The diagram consists of two timelines split up into three portions. The bottom portion of the axonometric diagram highlights structural events before the Urban Renewal proposals of the 1960s, as well as Hogan’s Alley today. This timeline is viewed as the ‘what happened’ or ‘what is’ timeline. The second timeline is the ‘what could have been,’ which highlights the Urban Renewal Proposals and the Perkins + Will proposal from the 2010s.
The Urban Renewal portion is on its own in the middle of the diagram because it is somewhere in-between ‘what is’ and ‘what could have been,’ as part of the proposals did come to fruition. Accompanying this timeline are illustrative sections that dive deeper into the structural relationships from the street, alley, and porches and interiors. The sections emphasize the changes in livelihood by highlighting music notes and the different ways people engage with each other over time. Additionally, the building typologies legend shows the different styles of buildings as they have existed over time or in the Urban Renewal and Perkins + Will proposals.
