SHATTERED: ICE GARDEN

Individual Project

For this studio, each student was tasked to design one concept for a viewing garden made of snow and ice for the University of Manitoba campus. We then voted on three gardens to construct, one of them being my design: ‘Shattered.’ The design was inspired by the stain glass window in the St. Paul’s building. I imagined that the window had exploded and left pieces of shattered stained glass in the snow. After many iterations, the final design was conceived, and we began construction. A team of three other students aided in construction. The marble effect was created by taken broken pieces of coloured ice and freezing them in a new batch of coloured water. We froze the coloured water in toboggan sleds and then used an ice knife to create shard-like shapes.
